Mini versions of the world’s largest equine sculptures are coming to the heart of the University. Image The three metre-high maquettes of The Kelpies, the rearing heads of two Clydesdale horses, will be in Old College Quadrangle and at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at Easter Bush in October and November. The versions are an exact 1:10 replica of the 30 metre-high sculptures located at Falkirk’s Helix Parkland. World tour Created by artist Andy Scott, the Kelpies opened to the public in April 2014. The maquettes arrive at the University after travelling the world. They have been on display in New York’s Bryant Park, Chicago’s Grant Park, and at last year’s Ryder Cup in Gleneagles. The Kelpies will be in Old College 3-29 October and at the Vet School 1-30 November. Family activities On Sunday 4 October The Kelpies will be the University’s centrepiece for Fun Palaces, a nationwide campaign to encourage everyone to engage with science and the arts. Fun Palace activities include a chemistry experiment with chocolate, taster sessions with professional circus performers and an attempt to build a sculpture bigger than The Kelpies. Local community choir, Castle Chorus, will also perform in the quad throughout the day. Fun Palace at The Kelpies We are delighted to welcome the maquettes to the University. Since the official opening in 2014, The Kelpies have become one of the country’s most iconic landmarks, and we are very grateful to Falkirk Council for allowing us to provide the miniature versions a home this autumn. We are sure students, staff and the wider community will thoroughly enjoy these impressive new additions to the University campus.
